Equestrian Fly Control Page |

There is nothing more annoying than
seeing your equine partners covered in flies.
Stamping feet, shaking of heads,
sneezing, bucking, constant moving, constant swaying, Fly bites,
hair loss, bumps, fly eggs all these are common symptoms known
to the horse owner.
On top of it, horse owners land with
flies in their mouthes, constant swatting and the ever enduring
of common cheap smells of fly traps.
At HBD Distributrors and Cleaning
Supplies (PTY) Ltd. we try and assist equestrian owners, and
people with businesses within equestrian areas or just people
who deal with a lot of flies to eliminate this problem.
It must be before warned that this is
not always a cheap excersice but once the cycle has been broken
and maintenance is underway there will be less costs involved
than in the beginning.
The secret
of the success of your fly control program lies in it that you
keep it up as with any other program and you stick thoroughly to
the program.
We will adress the steps that need to
be followed and thereafter the products from HBD that can be
used to do so.
Hopefully this page will assist you
in eliminating those annoying little things called the house
fly.
Should this program be administered
correctly it will also assist with the control of mosquitos and
midges.
How we going to do it? |
|
Stage 1: Fly Control Techniques
– In this stage, we are going to control flies by cleaning or
rather destroying their breeding sources. This will help us to
control any further growth of flies.
Sanitasion
This is one of the most
important aspects. Daily you need to remove the manure from not
ONLY YOUR STABLES but also from your stable yard.
should you not be able to remove the
manure from your stable yard on a daily basis you need to treat
that manure heap and keep it contained to one area.
All paddock areas need to be picked
and manure needs to be removed as from the stables. Clean
Stables and Clean paddocks and no manure lying around helps with
a clean enviroment giving the flies less chance to breed.
Stage 2: Fly Elimination Techniques
– Now, after destroying the breeding place of flies, we will be
left only with adult flies. Since they now have no place to lay
eggs, so the fly problem will get solved by eliminating them. |

|
Sprays
Space sprays and Bait traps/Fly strips
can be helpful tools in eliminating Flies, but the elimination
as discussed of their breeding sources is the only guaranteed
way to eliminate them.
Make certain that all possible
sanitation measures have been implemented before relying on
chemical sprays to eliminate flies.
Space sprays can be used to knock down existing fly
infestations, but this is only a temporary fix.
If breeding sites have not been eliminated or altered, flies
will continue to be a problem.
Surface
sprays can be used around windows and doors and should also be
used on any dustbins and drains.
Any area where flies "rest" or enter buildings/stables can be
treated with a good surface spray. However, do not spray
areas that horses/humans constantly come into contact with or on
surfaces where food is prepared or served.
The best product for surface spraying is a Cypermethrin based
product safe for horses.
For spraying on horses we recommend the
QUADREPEL from Intervet
(find Safety Data Sheet here)
Baits
Use baits inside areas where you have high fly volumes and
especially the area around such as trash containers, if there
are no non-target animals in the immediate area.
|
|
Please make sure there are no homeless people or incognito
people scratching through your dustbins at night! If so, do not
bait inside the bins, but bait the area surrounding the vessel.
Baits
should be re-applied after every cleaning or rainfall.
There are various fly baits
for flies; formulated for restaurants and other commercial
applications, but nothing have been specifically designed for
horses. We have therefore put together a program that works on
agricultural farms and stable yards. Hopefully these products
will be able to assist you.
Feel free to enquire about pricing and volumes needed and the
full spray program.
